Thanksgiving is a celebration of gratitude, of taking the time to appreciate all we have. In Steamboat Springs the trees are usually barren by Thanksgiving and the first snows have fallen. The cold outside makes the warmth of the indoors even more precious. Families reunite to play in the snow, share a meal and remember how wonderful life is.

Below are a few of the best ways to spend Thanksgiving in Steamboat.

1. Cook and take a moment to enjoy the flavor: There’s nothing better than a warm cooked meal with family on Thanksgiving. Go all out, add all the fixings and stuff yourself. Don’t forget the dessert of pumpkin pie, whipped cream, apple pie, cookies or whatever you like.

2. Relax: Take a nap, soak in a bath, or enjoy a massage or couple’s massage. The holidays are a great excuse to take a little down time. Sleep late, snuggle someone you love and be kind to yourself.

3. Give to others: Thanksgiving is about being thankful but also about giving. We recommend making a donation to a non-profit, volunteering your time or serving food to those in need. There are ways each of us can give. The reward for giving is so much greater than the reward of getting.

4. Appreciate Nature: The reason most people come to Steamboat is for the natural beauty. While you can watch the snow fall from inside, there is nothing like feeling snowflakes against your skin, the crunch of boots through the fallen leaves or through the champagne powder. The smells of winter will flood your senses and fill your soul.

5. Tell someone you love him or her. Love is so easy to give, but a lot of times we forget to tell those most important to us how much we love them. Three simple words can make all the difference in a person’s day or in a person’s life.

This Thanksgiving, don’t forget to give, to love and most importantly to take care of yourself. At Life Essentials Day Spa we will be thinking of all of you on Thanksgiving. If you want to come in and let us pamper you, we’d love to have you.

If you are a powder hound you’ve already been up on Buff Pass or Rabbit Ears with your rock skis making turns. It’s that season and it’s time to get your body ready for it. Here are our top five ways to get in shape for ski season.

1. Exercise different muscle groups. Every sport requires different muscle groups to perform. Overwork those muscles and you can have an injury on your hands. We recommend mixing up your workouts and your play. Try yoga or Pilates along with weight training and cardio exercise. Making sure your entire body is strong will help you perform your best this year.

2. Stay hydrated. At higher elevation it’s critical to keep your body hydrated. Dry muscles have a higher tendency of cramping up. Drink plenty of fluids including straight water. Electrolytes are good but there is no substitute for nature’s water.

3. Don’t go too hard until you are ready for it. There’s nothing like hiking into the backcountry and skiing or riding untouched terrain. Some people hike too far back and struggle to get out, or their muscles get tired and their performance gets sloppy. Build up to the longer outings.

4. Get a sports massage. Sports massage specifically targets the muscles you use when you work out. A massage from Life Essentials Day Spa can help loosen tight muscles, relax your body and get you ready for an epic season.

5. Eat healthy foods. Foods loaded with saturated fats and processed foods can really affect athletic performance. Stick to foods that came from the earth – vegetables, meat, and grains.

We hope this is an incredible season for you. When you are ready for some pampering or when you need someone to help relax your muscles, call Life Essentials Day Spa.

Steamboat has already had its first big snowstorm with six inches holding strong at the higher elevations. You may not think it’s time for winter, but after all, this is Steamboat and you pretty much have to be prepared for winter every month of the year. Before the snow gets good enough to ski, ride, snowshoe or snowmobile here are a few things you can do when the first snows fall.

1. Stick your tongue out and catch a snowflake.

2. Build a snowman/snowwoman. Steamboat is known for its champagne powder that is too light to pack a snowball much less a snowman but early season snows tend to be wet enough to pack in a solid snow sculpture.

3. Make a fire. If you are lucky enough to have a wood-burning fireplace, go out and chop some wood and let the flames crackle. If you have a gas fireplace, uncork a bottle of wine and cozy up with a good book or someone you love and pretend it’s caveman/cavewoman days.

4. Go to the movies. There’s something magical about getting lost in a good movie when it’s cold and snowy outside.

5. When the snow stops take a walk in the moonlight. You will be amazed how brightly the moon lights up the snow, the trails and even the icicles hanging on the trees.

6. Pretend it’s not snowing by getting a hot stone massage. With hot stones placed strategically on pressure points, you’ll not only warm up but you may even feel like you’ve been transported to a tropical island.

7. Go for a walk through the aspens during the sunrise. Almost always the first snows fall when the aspen leaves are stills a golden yellow. The contrast between fall and winter is magical.

8. Take a bubble bath. There’s nothing better than a long, hot bath to take winter’s chill away.

9. Enjoy a specialty drink. If you read these blogs you know I like hot chocolate. Throw in a little peppermint schnapps and you’ll be more than ready for winter.

10. Be a kid again. Pull out a sled and fly down a snowy hill.

Every year thousands of people flock to Steamboat Springs to enjoy the leaves of the aspens turning brilliant shades of gold, orange and even red. If you are headed up to the mountains to view the fall colors there are a few things you should know.

How to prepare:
Fall temperatures in Steamboat can range from 80 degrees to 20 degrees or colder depending on the year. Oftentimes there are huge swings in the temperature in a single day. If you are heading out for a hike, bike or any other outdoor adventure be prepared:
• Stop by BAP, the little red house on Oak Street, for jackets, hats and gloves to keep you warm.
• Always take food and water. Even if you are going out for a couple of hours, you never know what can happen. Have enough food for a couple of meals.
• Let someone know where you are going and when you plan on being back.
• Take something to start a fire if you get stuck and need to stay warm.
• Take a map and a charged phone.

Where to go:
• Fish Creek Falls. If you hike up past the first waterfall for about a ½ hour to 45 minutes you’ll come to a beautiful aspen grove that literally glows gold in the fall. The hike is strenuous but well worth it.
• Little Bear Trail. This trail is located about a ¼ mile before you reach the Strawberry Park Hot Springs. The trail is also challenging, but offers wide open vistas of Strawberry Park and Steamboat as well as a changing landscape as you ascend.
• Buffalo Pass. Driving up Buffalo Pass in the fall is an ascent into beauty. You’ll experience amazing views of the surrounding area, pine trees and aspens. There are many hikes you can take from Buffalo Pass so we recommend picking up the book ‘Hiking the Boat’ from Off the Beaten Path bookstore in downtown Steamboat.

Après adventure:
After you’ve finished your adventure for the day, especially if it’s been a strenuous one, here’s how we recommend you wind down.
• Spend a little time with the locals at Sunpie’s Bistro. Try the pork, gravy and French fry sandwich with a cold beer.
• Get a Swedish massage to relax your muscles at Life Essentials Day Spa. This spa was awarded Best of the Boat several years in a row.
• Soak in the Strawberry Park Hot Springs in one of Steamboat’s most scenic settings.

Most of all enjoy your time in Steamboat this fall. It’s one of our top four favorite seasons.

It’s hard to believe, with the warm weather we’ve had, that fall is on the way but the yellow leaves drifting from the trees tell another story. Before we know it frost will be on the ground and the fall blue sky, so brilliant, will be clear above us. As the cold weather descends, we have a few tips for staying warm in Steamboat.

1. Try a Mexican Hot Chocolate from Mountain Brew. If you haven’t been to Mountain Brew on 4th and Oak Street you are missing out. Their Mexican hot chocolate has a little spiciness to heat you up on a cool day. If that’s not enough, indulge in one of their cupcakes like their Pistachio or their Chai cupcakes. You will be feeling warm and fuzzy inside before you know it.

2. Spend a night at the Steamboat Grand and soak in their outdoor salt-water hot tub and heated pool. The Steamboat Grand sits at the base of the ski mountain. Their pool and hot tub are open until 10:00 p.m. and offer a warm, relaxing place to watch the last rays of the sun fall behind Emerald Mountain.

3. Pamper Yourself with a Hot Stone Massage at Life Essentials Day Spa. To begin your massage, hot stones are placed strategically on your body to help loosen tight muscles and increase circulation and relaxation. After that, your therapist will massage your body and get your blood flowing.

4. Bike up Mt. Werner or Emerald Mountain. In the fall the gondola stops running in the daytime as the ski area ramps up for the winter season. So instead of taking the gondola up, bike up one of several trails on Mt. Werner or Emerald Mountain. There is no doubt you’ll be warm by the time you get to the top. Don’t forget extra layers for the way down.

5. Have appetizers and a beverage at Three Peaks Grill. Three Peaks has an amazing fireplace with two couches for you to lounge on as the flames of the fire heat up the ambiance and your cold bones. Stay for dinner and enjoy amazing steaks and seafood.

Despite the heat and humidity we have been experiencing in Steamboat this summer, the high elevation and typically dry climate contribute to dry skin, and an increase in the appearance of wrinkles. The sun’s harsh rays promote aging in the skin and brown spots. If you don’t wear sunglasses, squinting can cause crow’s lines around the eyes. Overall, living in Steamboat, although it offers so many health benefits, can take a toll on your skin.

Below are a few tips for taking care of your skin in the summer:

1. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. Using a daily moisturizer that works with your skin’s balance is the best way of combating the signs of aging. Moisturizers replenish your skin, help plump it and help reduce signs of aging and lines.

2. Schedule a facial once a month. Facials aren’t just for cleansing of the skin. Facials offer several benefits including exfoliation to rid your face of dry, dead skin cells, a hydrating mask and moisturizing treatments to help promote the skin’s natural glow. At Life Essentials Day Spa we recommend our Progenerate Facial as an entry-level facial to help balance your skin and replenish health lost by Steamboat’s harsh climate.

3. For Melasma or hyper-pigmentation (the brown spots that appear from sun damage), our Collagen Facial helps lighten the skin and lower melanin production. Post care is required to maintain results. Your aesthetician will aid you in choosing the right products to help keep your skin clear.

4. Life Essential Day Spa’s Illuminating Facial is specifically designed for Steamboat’s climate. The facial addresses dehydration from weather and aging. Your aesthetician will work wonders on your face with vitamins, nutrients, hyaluronic acids and peptides. The results are plumping of the skin, minimizing wrinkles and lines and leaving your skin feeling softer and looking years younger.

5. Our Age Defying Facial and Oxygen Anti-Aging Facial utilize serums and vitamins A,C,D and E to help promote cellular renewal. Our collagen treatments ensures your skin will look visibly younger. Oxygen Anti-Aging Facials extends the treatment of the Age Defying Facial and add a serum booster of Atoxelene, a no-tox botox treatment.

If you live in Steamboat, sooner or later you will see the effects of the climate on your skin. We believe prevention and routine care are the best methods to protect your skin and help keep you looking young and fresh. Call Life Essentials Day Spa to book your appointment today – 970-871-9543.

People come to Steamboat from around the world to escape their hectic city lives and to return to a simpler way of life. During your visit here, or even if you live here, we believe you should take time out of your day or week to simply relax. Below are our top five ways to relax in Steamboat Springs.

1. Disconnect from electronics. Turn off your computer, leave you cell phone at home and experience the world with true connectedness and authenticity. I know this can be a scary thought if you have young children or if you have a job that believes they should have access to you 24/7, but if you really want to relax, make arrangements with someone else to field calls from kids or change your voicemail to say you will return calls in x amount of time. Setting expectations with others allows you to enjoy the time you spend alone and not to have interference from the outside world.

2. Reconnect with Nature. When was the last time you smelled the roses? Literally. In the summer time the hills are filled with wildflowers, birds sing their stories and clouds scatter across the sky. When you step into nature you walk with the bears, the moose the elk and the deer. Choose a walk or hike appropriate for your fitness level, but spend the walk noticing the details of the world around you. Remember, this is your world, you belong here and all the bright colors, sounds and smells are gifts for you to enjoy.

3. Book a massage. Much like our first tip, getting a massage or a spa treatment in Steamboat Springs forces you to shut out the outside word. Phones get turned off, no one can reach you, and for an hour or longer you get to focus on your body and your needs. Choose a spa with an excellent reputation like Life Essentials Day Spa, where your trained therapist works to relieve stress and muscle tension.

4. Soak in the hot springs. Steamboat is fortunate to have two hot springs, the Old Town Hot Springs and the Strawberry Park Hot Springs. The Old Town Hot Springs offers a more family-friendly experience. The Strawberry Park Hot Springs is a little more remote and rustic. If you go at night, you’ll be amazed by how many stars you can count in the sky, by how bright the moon is and by how easy it is to relax and let the hot waters soak away your cares.

5. Tube down the Yampa River. This is one of the most popular activities in Steamboat for locals and visitors alike in the summer time. If you can’t swim, wear a life jacket, as the rocks and current can tip you. Floating down the Yampa lets you wind and move through life at the speed of the river. The best time to go is before 3:00 when afternoon storms have a tendency of rolling in.

Steamboat is an ideal place to visit to relax and forget about the rest of the world. The only problem is you may not want to go back!

At Life Essentials Day Spa we understand the importance of shared experiences in relationships, which is why we have a special room set aside so that you and your lover, your loved one or the one you want to love can lie side by side, relax and be pampered together. If you need more incentive than that, consider the following reasons to book a couple’s massage:

1. Mutual Satisfaction. When was the last time you and your loved one experienced mutual, synchronized satisfaction? If you have recently, kudos to you and please email me your techniques. Usually in relationships it’s one at a time. With a couple’s massage, you both get to relax and experience bliss at exactly the same time.

2. You get to see you partner’s ‘M’ face. Maybe you haven’t heard of an ‘M’ face, but it’s the expression one gets as they are having a perfectly executed massage. Sometimes this results in slack jaw, drool slipping from one’s mouth, sometimes it’s a simple sigh as the eyes close. If you haven’t seen your partner’s ‘M’ face, book a massage today.

3. No clean up. A home-cooked romantic dinner is wonderful, but who is doing the clean up? A massage at home is great, but who is washing the massage oil off the sheets? At Life Essentials Day Spa you show up, lie on a table, enjoy your massage then leave. There is no mess for either one of you to clean up.

4. Give the gift of kindness. Massage has been proven to reduce stress, relax muscles, help circulation and improve mood. Where else can you get those kinds of benefits in an hour or an hour and a half?

5. It’s a gift for you, too. We will let you spin the couple’s massage however you want but at the end of the day booking a massage for you and your loved one means you get to be pampered too and you deserve it!

6. Your therapist listens to you. Have you ever had your partner give you a massage and after about five minutes they relax on the pressure, get wrapped up in whatever TV show is on and forget all about you? We don’t. Our job is to listen to you and apply the type of pressure that you like for the full hour of your massage.

7. You never know where massage will lead. So you book a couple’s massage in the morning. It’s fantastic. You and your partner feel relaxed and you still have the day ahead of you. Who knows where that may lead – snuggling in bed for an afternoon nap, a lunch of healthy greens and veggies, tubing down the river. If you had a massage, take the rest of the day off and remember how wonderful life is when you have love in your life.

If you are ready to book a couple’s massage, call us at 970-871-9543.

Summer is finally here. With such a short summer season people head out in droves to walk through fields of wildflowers, tube down the Yampa River and watch the sunsets turn the sky to fire. Each big or small interaction with nature creates balance and peace within us. They remind us of our interconnectedness to all creatures while also reminding us of the beauty of the world we live in. While it’s easy to connect body and mind to the outdoors, we also need to be cognizant of connecting our muscles, our circulation and our spirit to a peaceful state. There is nothing more beneficial than a spa package to help relax, and realign your body. Taking the time for massage shows you care about yourself, that you are important and that you are part of this incredible tapestry of life.

At Life Essentials Day Spa we offer three packages to promote health and well being. Each package is designed to connect you to the natural ecosystems of your body.

Earth Package: A 60-minute balancing massage is combined with a 30 minute reflexology session. Our feet are our primary connection with the earth. Reflexology works with pressure points in the feet to relax and release stress and pain throughout the body. Our balancing massages combine deep tissue and Swedish massage for an experience designed to bring you into your body so you can feel the healing nature of touch.

Water Package: Our water package is about hydration. For two hours you will be treated to a massage and a Progenerate Facial. This service starts out with a 60-minute balancing massage designed to relax and lengthen muscles, much as swimming can do for us. The Progenerate Facial works to cleanse, moisturize and rehydrate skin for plumper, younger looking skin.

Our Alpen Glow Package will bring your senses alive with our signature scent of ginger and lemongrass. During this service you will experience a balancing massage that relaxes and releases tension throughout the body. This is followed by a 60 minute Sugar Glow Scrub that invigorates the skin and improves circulation. The service ends with a Progenerate Facial, to help revitalize dehydrated or tired skin with cleansing, moisturizing and rehydration. When you walk out of this treatment you will feel as vibrant as our sunsets.

No matter which package you are drawn to, Earth, Water or Alpen Glow, you will find you have reconnected with your body and the natural systems within. As you walk out, you may find the world more vivid, more alive than before. Call Life Essentials Day Spa today to book your appointment. 970-871-9543.
