What You Need To Know About Pre-Natal Massage

Work with the Best Day Spa in Steamboat

Pre-natal massage is the term used for massage given during pregnancy. Massage given during any time of life, but especially during pregnancy, can help relieve stress, reduce swelling of the legs and ankles, improve circulation, increase dopamine levels and the release of endorphins in the body and help relieve pain associated with your changing body.

At Life Essentials Day Spa we offer pre-natal massages to women only after their first trimester. During the first trimester of a pregnancy, there is a higher rate of miscarriage than in the second and third trimester. It is believed that certain pressure points can trigger a miscarriage early on in the pregnancy; however there are studies that claim massage at any point in a pregnancy is beneficial. At Life Essentials Day Spa we prefer to err on the side of caution and therefore will not perform massage on any mother in her first trimester.

Before you have a massage you should consult your pre-natal care professional to make sure massage is safe for you. If you are experiencing any complications with your pregnancy then it is especially important to discuss whether or not massage will be beneficial. Once you arrive at our spa treatment facility your therapist will ask you if you are experiencing any pain or tension. Please be honest with your therapist so they can provide the best experience for you.

One major difference with pre-natal massage and regular massage is that you lie on your side during the massage with pillows to support you. This is so there is no pressure on the abdomen or on the baby during the massage. Your therapist will treat you to either 60 minutes or 90 minutes of Swedish massage. Swedish massage focuses on relaxation, stress relief and improvement of circulation. The benefits of Swedish massage are many. After your treatment you may notice you are better able to sleep, that your back pain has been relieved, as have headaches and muscle tension. We do not perform deep tissue massage on women during pregnancy.

For your safety, be sure to ask whether or not your masseuse has been trained in pre-natal massage. Working massage into a weekly, bi-weekly or even monthly routine can result in an easier pregnancy, improved mood and improved comfort.
